Alex in a neck brace
Alex in Whistler in his Philly collar after breaking his neck
Both boys have had injuries that stopped them from working. Alex was off work for four months with his broken neck - he was not allowed to carry more than 5 lbs - which is a six pack of beer! He applied for Employment Insurance, waited the 2 weeks, then had some vacation pay, so did not receive anything for 3 weeks. After that he received $400 a month which was taxed! His rent in Whistler was $500 a month.
After this experience with EI I suggested to Nick that he should now buy his own disability insurance. The following April he shattered his right knee cap on a rock that was not visible as he was skiing in 4 feet of new powder. He ended up with a hip to ankle cast and was off work for two months. He received $1,200 per month tax free as we had chosen first day injury coverage. This was a much better deal than EI!

Prior to these injuries Nick and Alex had both purchased critical illness insurance at my suggestion. This will pay $100,000 if either of them is diagnosed with a life threatening cancer, or has a heart attack or stroke. It also covers many other critical conditions including paralysis - if Alex had been paralyzed the $100,000 would have helped a lot.

My friend Patti was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when she was 25 - it is covered on this insurance.

Leida is the daughter of a close friend Renee. Leida used to baby sit Nick and Alex in Newfoundland. She was diagnosed with melanoma at 22 and survived until 31.
